History—a discipline that records and explains past events—is not only important but also valuable for planning the future.
Our organization, MMC/GANA, began as a spark of inspiration on a frosty November morning in 1987, in the Windy City of Chicago, Illinois.
Drs. Kolar N. Murthy and K.L. Satyanarayana, while visiting friends, conceived the idea. Chilled but invigorated, they returned to sunny California where, as they joked, minds worked better.
Together with Drs. N. Devaraj, Gurushanthiah, A.V.S. Murthy, and Rajashekar—and with guidance from Chicago-based Drs. M. Raichand and M.S. Lakshminarayan—they committed to forming an alumni association. This idea stood resilient against both California smog and earthquakes.
Held in December 1988, our inaugural reunion was marked by warm hospitality, delightful weather, and strong camaraderie.
A highlight was Thanksgiving at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Devaraj. One humorous misadventure? Asking for prices at high-end stores on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills—the famed shopping haven of the stars.
During Christmas week in 1990, members gathered aboard the luxurious Princess Cruise ship.
Surrounded by family and friends, the event blended fun and education, enhanced by festive cuisine. To this day, our youngsters fondly recall the dream cruise.
In December 1992, members convened at the Sheraton Bougainvilleas Hotel.
The event offered an exhilarating mix of scientific sessions and family bonding, balanced with leisure and relaxation.
Held at Jamaica Grande on the sapphire Caribbean coast, the 1994 reunion left a lasting impression.
From the scenic ride from Montego Bay to enriching scientific programs and vibrant social gatherings, the experience was unforgettable.
It was deeply gratifying to witness the efforts of Dr. H.N. Ramaprakash and others in planning and fundraising for the auditorium project at Mysore Medical College.
The December 1999 reunion in Mysore, under the presidency of Dr. K.L. Satyanarayana, marked a heartfelt moment—giving back to our beloved alma mater.
Under the leadership of G.T. Krishnamurthy, the 1996 reunion was held in Costa Rica (December 25–30).
A keynote address by Nobel Laureate Dr. Oscar Arias Sanchez, former President of Costa Rica, elevated the event.
A special souvenir issue edited by Dr. Kolar N. Murthy was released. Our youth presented invigorating sessions, making the scientific program highly rewarding.
The success of this reunion was greatly supported by our spouses and children.
Through the Arias Foundation for Peace and Human Progress, three major initiatives were established:
Center for Human Progress – Promoting equal opportunities for women in Central America
Center of Philanthropy – Encouraging socially responsible giving in Latin America
Center for Peace and Reconciliation – Focused on demilitarization and conflict resolution
His message urged us toward an era of peace and prosperity, emphasizing that without a humanistic foundation, progress loses its meaning.
As the 21st century approached, Y2K hysteria briefly captured attention—but soon faded into history.
We were fortunate to witness the transformative latter half of the 20th century. Yet the innovations ahead promise to surpass those of the past.
Let us carry forward the human values that give meaning to our achievements.
Under the chairmanship of Kanagal Satyanarayana, a landmark reunion was held at the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium—a gift from alumni and the MMC community, supported by the Government of Karnataka.
This dream project came to life through the tireless efforts of Drs. Ramaprakash (U.S.) and Kantha Jadhav (Mysore).
The CME program was exceptionally well received. A commemorative magazine edited by Drs. Kolar N. Murthy and V. Lakshminarayana was distributed.
Attendees fondly recall the spectacular evening at the Race Course Club organized by Dr. N.M. Srinivas.
Led by the late Dr. Rajalakshmi, the Ireland reunion was flawlessly organized.
The lush landscapes, Irish humor, abundant Guinness, and high-quality CME discussions remain vivid memories for attendees.
Organized by President Dr. Melukote Srinivas, the China trip was remarkable.
The tour, CME sessions, and cultural programs were executed flawlessly. Special thanks to China Silk Tours (Elsa Lo) and their NYC-based team.
For the first time, a CD-R souvenir was created, featuring alumni addresses and reunion activities—combining practical information with cherished memories.
From Chicago inspiration in 1987 to international reunions across continents, MMC/GANA continues to:
Foster alumni connections
Promote continuing medical education
Encourage global collaboration
Give back to Mysore Medical College
As we move forward, may we preserve the spirit of unity, service, scholarship, and human values that define MMC/GANA.
